Around the world there are some wineproducers that have chosen to use aluminum cans for their wines. One of them is Elkan, a Chilean company that offers six types of wines.
In the conservative world of wines all kinds of novelties regarding the packaging of the beverage have not been viewed with kind eyes. When the screwcap entered the stage it did not receive positive critics, the same happened to wine in tetra pak and bag in box.
In an article from World of Wine published September 18th of this year (the article is in Swedish) we get to know that Systembolaget (the govermnent controlled alcohol beverage shops) is not yet interested in selling wine in cans. But we also get to know that regarding to Danish paper Vinavisen.dk, Rexam, one of the biggest international producers of cans this year will sell about 35 millions of cans to the international wine industry. This can be compared to the 6 millions of cans sold to the wine industry in 2006 and within a couple of years the sales are estimated to reach more than 100 millions of cans.
In spite of the opinions against the packaging many producers have chosen to keep using it. One of them is Chilean producer Elkan, a company that since 2006 offers quality wines to the modern wine consumer.
Among the advantages Elkan lists:
- no risk for the package to break
- the aluminum can is lighter than a bottle which contributes to less carbon emission
- the wine reaches the desired temperature quicker
- it's an ideal amount if the consumer does not wish to open a whole bottle
Elkan offers three reds; Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenére and Merlot, two whites ; Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and a rosé. The next varieties to launch are a sparkling wine and a Syrah.
The team of Vinoschilenos.eu had the opportunity to try Elkan wines and this is our comment:
Of course the sensation of opening a can is different to opening a bottle! One of the members of the team thought it felt like opening a beer can and that it takes away the exclusivity of the wine bottle. But we were surprised by the great taste of the wine and considering the irritation with corks that breake in the middle of opening a bottle or a bottle that breaks for that matters, the can do have a lot of advantages. We also like the amount, it's easy to open a can and have a glass with the desired meal without feeling stressed over an opened bottle that have to be finished before turning bad.
In conclusion we hope to see Elkan and other wine alternatives in cans on the shelves of Systembolaget soon!
